Eliminate Weeds in Medicine Hat and Promote Healthier Grass with Be Yard Smart

Lawn aeration or core aeration helps your lawn become healthier, thicker and more resistant to drought and weeds. Medicine Hat residents should be aware that core aeration plays an important part in maintaining a healthy lawn. Aeration can be done in the spring, summer, or fall. If your property has an irrigation system installed, Be Yard Smart in Medicine Hat will take the necessary steps to eliminate any chance of damage.

What is Lawn Aeration or Core Aeration?

Grass roots require air, water and sunlight to grow and stay healthy. When soil becomes compacted, space for air and water is greatly reduced. Core aeration removes dirt plugs which results in compaction-reducing swelling of the soil. Aeration does benefit all types of grass. You may be a candidate for our services if any of the following apply to your property:

  • Noticeable weeds
  • Puddling in the lawn when it rains
  • You have clay soil
  • Lawn is patchy or thin

If you live in a new home, please know that newly sodded lawns, especially peat sods can be aerated once they are well rooted (usually in about 7 to 9 weeks). Lawns can be aerated anytime there is adequate moisture, but the best times to aerate are in the late spring and early fall.

What We Do

We aerate the entirety of your lawn using an aerator (an aeration machine), walking back and forth, much like mowing the grass. The machine removes small plugs of soil every few inches which are then deposited on the ground surface. These plugs break down organically and aid in the rejuvenation process.

What are key benefits of core aeration?

  • Improves air exchange and water exchange with roots
  • Improves fertilizer effectiveness and drought stress tolerance
  • Breaks through dead grass material to eliminates layering
  • Stimulates thatch breakdown
  • Helps reduce soil compaction
  • Allows for a more efficient use of water
